Junior forward Margot Scharfe led the Orange offense with two goals as the Syracuse ice hockey team shutout RPI, 4-0, for the second night in a row. In net for Syracuse (7-5-1, 3-0-1 CHA), was Jenesica Drinkwater, who tallied 17 saves in her second shutout of the season and fourth of her career. Both Sadie St. Germain and Melissa Piacentini tallied goals for the Orange as well.
"Two shutouts in a row is pretty impressive with the commitment on defense from everybody and not just our goaltending and defense," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "I thought everybody came back in the zone and played well. It's really an overall team commitment and that's nice to have."
Halfway through the first period, SU would score its first of the night. Caitlin Roach would find Nicole Renault at the blue line. Renault fired a shot at the net, but the puck was stopped by RPI goaltender, Kelly O'Brien. St. Germain was there to pick up the rebound and find the back of the net, to give the Orange a 1-0 advantage 10:19 in the first period.
The second period remained scoreless with SU holding a slight, 8-6, advantage in shots.
A three-goal third period, that included two quick back-to-back power play goals, sealed the Orange's eighth win of the season. Piacentini was the first to score in the third period with a power play goal at 3:13. Both Shiann Darkangelo and Renualt were credited with the assists. It was Piacentini's third goal of the weekend.
Scharfe extended SU's lead to, 3-0, with her first tally of the night . Kaillie Goonough hit the puck out to Holly Carrie-Mattimoe in the corner. Carrie-Mattimoe dished it out to Scharfe who was able to beat O'Brien.
With less than two minutes left in the nonconference game, RPI pulled O'Brien, leaving an empty net. Renault found Nicole Ferrara who rebounded the puck up the right boards to Scharfe. Scharfe had a wide open net in front of her and scored her fourth goal of the season and 24th of her career with 1:10 remaining in the game.
Nicole Renault tallied three assists in today's game. It was the first time that an Orange skater tallied three assists in one game since Jacquie Greco against Mercyhurst (3/2/12). SU outshot RPI, 24-17, overall. O'Brien totaled 20 saves in the game.
This is the second time in program history and the second time this season, that the Orange have shutout an opponent in both games of a weekend series. The first was at Penn State when SU won 4-0 and 6-0.
