SYRACUSE, NY - In its first conference loss of the season, the Syracuse ice hockey team was defeated by Robert Morris, 2-1, at home. Sophomore forward Shiann Darkangleo had the tally for the Orange. Sophomore forward Melissa Piacentini also extended her point-streak to three games with an assist on Darkangelo's goal. In net for the Orange (8-6-1, 3-1-1 CHA) was Kaillie Billadeau who recorded 25 saves in the contest.
The Orange was the first to get on the board after Darkangleo scored her seventh goal of the season at 11:41 in the first period. Piacentini found Darkangelo just outside the crease. Darkangelo fired a shot that goaltender Kristen DiCiocco saved off of her pad. Darkangelo gathered up the rebound and buried the puck, giving SU the 1-0 advantage.
The Colonials began its two-goal comeback at 5:54 in the second period. Thea Imbrongno tied up the game, 1-1, after notching a goal off of a pass from Rebecca Vint.
With three and a half minutes remaining in the second frame, Maddie Collias found Vint in front of the net. Vint was able to beat Billadeau, giving RMU its first and final lead of the night, 2-1, at 17:34.
The third period remained scoreless between the two CHA teams and for the first time in the game, RMU held the advantage in shots, 12-7. SU pulled Billadeau with 59 seconds left to try and send the game into overtime, but the Orange failed to net the equalizer.
Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play. Syracuse outshot Robert Morris, 31-27, including a 13-6 advantage in the first period and a 12-9 lead in the second frame. DiCiocco tallied 31 saves.
The two teams rematch tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
