SU Splits Weekend at Union; Loses 4-2

The Syracuse ice hockey split its series at the Union this weekend after falling to the Dutchwomen, 4-2, this afternoon. Senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and junior Nicole Ferarra's each notched a goal for SU. Ferrara (1g, 1a) and Kaillie Goodnough (2a) each had multipoint games. The Orange (5-5-0, 2-0-0 CHA) defeated Union last night, 2-1.
"Union did a very good job against us defensively," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "They scored some timely goals and were the better team today. We have to regroup on Monday and do a good job of preparing for RIT next weekend."
Union scored its first goal of the night at 15:44 in the first period, when Camille Corbin notched her first goal of the season. The Dutchwomen then jumped to a two-goal lead, at 12:01 in the second period off of a power play goal. It was the first power play goal that the SU penalty killing unit allowed this weekend. Rhianna Kurio was credited with the tally.
Carrie-Mattimoe pulled the Orange within one at 2-1 when she scored her fifth goal of the season at 14:46 in the second. Carrie-Mattimoe is now tied for first on SU's all-time career list with 34 career goals. Goodnough and Ferrara each had assists on the tallies.
Stefanie Thomas then scored back-to-back goals to put Union up, 4-1.
Nicole Ferarra tallied a goal for the Orange with 33 seconds left in the game. Goodnough also had the assist.
Junior goaltender Kallie Billadeau recorded 17 saves before freshman goaltender Julie Bengis saw game action for the first time this season in the third period. Bengis recorded 11 saves.
The Orange held the advantage in shots in the first and second periods, 11-7 and 11-9 respectively. They were outshot, 16-11 in the third period.
SU outshot Union overall, 33-32, making it the ninth game of the season that Syracuse outshot its opponent.
Next up for the Orange is a road game at RIT on Saturday Nov. 10th at 2 p.m.
