SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 112th season of Syracuse basketball tips off Sunday, November 11 at the "Battle On The Midway" in San Diego, Calif. The No. 9/9 Orange takes on No. 20/20 San Diego State at 4 p.m. (EST) on the aircraft carrier USS Midway.
The game will be televised by Fox Sports San Diego and Fox Sports Regional networks. Click here for a complete list. ORANGE IN SEASON OPENERS
Syracuse will open the season away from the Carrier Dome for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The Orange has won seven consecutive season openers dating back to the 2004-05 campaign. Under the direction of head coach Jim Boeheim, the Orange is an astounding 32-4 in season openers.
37 AND COUNTING
Head coach Jim Boeheim enters his 37th season at the helm of the Syracuse program. Boeheim was named the seventh head coach in Syracuse history on April 3, 1976. Since then he has guided the Orange to a record of 890-304 (.745), 10 BIG EAST regular-season titles, five tournament crowns and 29 NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2002-03, Boeheim led his alma mater to the school's first NCAA Tournament title. In 2010, he was presented with the Naismith Award, the Henry Iba National Coach of the Year Award, and similar honors from the Associated Press, NABC, Sporting News and YahooSports.
With 10 more victories, Boeheim will become just the third Division I coach to record 900 career victories. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.
A LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse went 2-0 in the preseason with a 99-63 victory against Pace on Nov. 1 and a 103-60 win against Bloomsburg on Nov. 4. Senior James Southerland came off the bench to lead the Orange's offense, averaging 17.5 points per game in the two exhibitions.
Senior Brandon Triche reached double figures in scoring in both contests, including a team-high 23 points against Bloomsburg. Sophomore Michael Carter-Williams joined the starting lineup in both contests and averaged 15.5 point and 7.5 assists per contest.
In addition, freshman DaJuan Coleman made his highly anticipated debut in the preseason. He posted 10.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE
Sunday's game will also act as San Diego State's season opener. The Aztecs went 2-0 in their exhibition games, recording a 67-46 win against Cal State San Marcos and an 80-56 victory against UC San Diego. San Diego State went 26-8 last year and participated in the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year, before losing to North Carolina State 79-65.
The Aztecs, which are ranked No. 20 in the preseason polls, have four of its five starters returning this year. Junior Jamaal Franklin led the team last year in points and rebounds, averaging 17.4 points and 7.9 rebounds a game. Franklin was named the Preseason Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and earned a spot on the Mountain West Conference preseason all-conference team, along with teammate Chase Tepley.
San Diego State is led by Steve Fisher, who is in his 14th season as head coach for the Aztecs. Fisher has guided San Diego State to a 258-160 record and eight NCAA tournaments.
