901 AND COUNTING…
Head coach Jim Boeheim earned his 901st career victory when Syracuse defeated Alcorn State on Saturday, Dec. 29. He is now just one win away from tying Bob Knight for second place on the all-time record list for most victories by a Division I men's basketball coach. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Knight and Boeheim are the only three Division I coaches to accumulate 900 triumphs. Boeheim is the only one of the three to reach the milestone at one school.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse returned to its winning ways with a 57-36 victory against Alcorn State on Saturday, Dec. 29 in the Carrier Dome.
The Orange used a 12-0 scoring run in the first half to take a 16-6 lead. SU led by as many as 16 in the opening half before taking a 32-16 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Syracuse struggled coming out of the break, going 11:26 without a basket to open the second half. The Braves took advantage of the Orange's poor shooting and cut the lead to 36-29 with 13:03 to play. Redshirt freshman Trevor Cooney hit a three-pointer for SU's first bucket of the second half at the 11:26 mark, sparking the Orange on a 12-2 scoring run that gave Syracuse a 48-31 lead with 5:35 to play. The Orange equaled its largest lead of the day on Cooney's layup with 10 seconds remaining, which gave SU the 57-36 victory.
Cooney was one of two players to reach double figures in scoring for Syracuse, finishing with 12 points. Junior C.J. Fair led the way with 13 points.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Central Connecticut enters Monday's game with an overall record of 4-6. The Blue Devils have lost three straight, including a 71-69 setback to St. Peter's on Saturday.
