NEW YORK, N.Y. – Jim Boeheim tied Dean Smith for third on the career coaching wins list and #2/2 Syracuse (23-1, 10-1) had five players in double digits in a 95-70 win at St. John's (10-13, 4-7) on Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.
The victory was Boeheim's 879 of his career. He and the former North Carolina coach are also tied for the most wins at one university. This is Boeheim's 36th year at the helm of the Orange.
Fab Melo scored a career-high 14 points while grabbing three rebounds and blocking two shots. Melo, Dion Waiters (14 points) and #C.J. Fair# (14 points) led 10 players in the scoring column. Michael Carter-Williams (13) and Kris Joseph (13) also reached double-digits. The 13 points for Carter-Williams was a career-high. He was 3-of-4 from behind the arch.
SU scored 24 second-chance points and the Orange outscored the Red Storm 52-20 in the paint. The Syracuse bench outscored the Red Storm 53-23. SU also held a 42-31 rebounding advantage, 16 of which have come on the offensive glass.
The Orange started the game 0-of-5 from the field, but was 39-of-65 from that point on (56 percent overall). This was Syracuse's seventh-consecutive victory against the Red Storm.
St. John's took an early 7-2 lead, but Waiters connected on SU's first field goal four and a half minutes into the game. His jumper ignited a 10-0 run over the next two minutes, which gave Syracuse a 12-7 lead and forced St. John's into a timeout.
With the Orange holding an eight-point advantage (35-27), SU scored the final six points over the last three minutes of the half to grab its largest lead of the frame at 41-27. Syracuse would take that 14 point-margin into the break.
Syracuse scored the first nine points out of the intermission, pushing its lead to 23 just three minutes into the second half. The run would ultimately end up 22-3 between the two halves, putting the game out of reach.
SU largest lead of the game reached 28 when Melo tipped in a Joseph missed layup, bringing the score 59-31 with 13:43 remaining. From that point on, the SU advantage would not dip below 21 points.
Joseph grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and also dished out four assists. Triche had a team-high five helpers. St. John's was paced by D'Angelo Harrison who had 23 points and connected on five three-pointers.
Syracuse is back in action this Wednesday night as the Orange host No. 14 Georgetown at the Carrier Dome (7:00 p.m., ESPN).
