SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Jim Boeheim passed Dean Smith for third on the career coaching wins list with his 880th victory, as No. 2/2 Syracuse (24-1, 11-1) defeated No. 12/11 Georgetown (18-5, 8-4) 64-61 in overtime on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome.
Boeheim now sits alone at the top with the most win by one coach at the same school. Coach Boeheim is in his 36th year at Syracuse.
Kris Joseph poured in a career-high 29 points and hit a career-best six three-pointers in a game that featured 15 ties and 18 lead changes. The senior was 9-of-20 overall and also had five rebounds and three steals. Fab Melo joined Joseph in double figures with 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked six shots.
After Melo swatted Henry's Sims jumper on Georgetown's final possession of regulation, the Orange had a chance win the game, but a three-point attempt from Dion Waiters drew front iron and SU headed to its first overtime of the season.
Joseph added to his career night on SU's final offensive possession of overtime as he received a pass from Scoop Jardine and hit his sixth three-pointer with 29 seconds remaining, which proved to be the game-winner.
The SU defense buckled down on the final of the possession of the game and did not allow the Hoyas to put up the game-tying three. Georgetown's Jason Clark had the ball in his hand, but Jardine was able to force a turnover with four second remaining which iced the game.
Georgetown took a 20-15 lead with 7:59 remaining in the opening frame, but the Orange answered with a six straight points to take the lead back. However, the Hoyas surged ahead with a 9-2 run and held a 31-27 lead at halftime.
SU came out of the locker room on fire, scoring the first eight points of the half and gained a 35-31 advantage when Brandon Triche connected on a transition three-pointer. The Hoyas though, would score the next six points to once again regain the lead with 14:32 remaining in the second half.
The game would be tied three more times until Syracuse used a 6-0 run to gain its largest lead of the contest at 54-48 with 4:37 remaining. However, Georgetown outscored SU 7-1 down the stretch, including a deep three from Clark and 1-of-2 from the free throw line by Greg Whittington to even the game at 55.
The Orange shot 35 percent for the game (22-of-63) and held a 24-22 advantage in the paint. Georgetown was 33 percent from the floor (21-of-63) and out-rebounded the Orange 52-35.
#C.J. Fair# had a team-high nine rebounds, while Jardine handed out eight assists. Georgetown had three players in double figures, led by Otto Porter with 14. Clark had 12 points and Hollis Thompson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
