SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Facing an 18-point deficit at halftime, the Syracuse women's basketball team (15-10, 4-7) would cut No. 2/2 Notre Dame's (24-1, 11-0) lead to as little as 10 before the Fighting Irish used a 13-4 run midway through the second half to pull away with a 74-55 win on Tuesday night in the Carrier Dome. Senior Iasia Hemingway led the Orange with 15 points.
Notre Dame, which shot 42.6 percent (29-of-68) from the floor, was led by Devereaux Peters' 21 points and 16 rebounds. Kayla McBride contributed 19 points
Both teams were plagued by poor shooting from the floor to start the game (SU: 2-of-11; Notre Dame: 3-of-11) with Notre Dame leading 6-4 through four and a half minutes of play.
After Carmen Tyson-Thomas hit a jumper from the right side to end a 6-0 Irish run and a nearly five minute field goal drought, Notre Dame responded with a 7-0 surge to take a 22-8 lead. Tyson-Thomas (8 points) also added a career-high six steals to lead all players.
Brittany Mallory began the second half with a three-pointer from the corner, SU answered with an 11-0, highlighted by a coast-to-coast drive from Phylesha Bullard, prompting a Notre Dame timeout just 2:36 into the half.
SU continued to force turnovers on the defensive end, and cut the deficit to 11 as Kayla Alexander converted a three-point play after being fouled by Natalie Achonwa.
Skylar Diggins would bring the ND lead back up to 13 thanks to five straight points with 9:44 left, including three free throws.
The Orange would make a final effort to get back in the game with a 6-0 run to make it 62-50 with 4:29 left in regulation, but consecutive layups by Peters and Diggins put the game out of reach.
Syracuse will be back in action on Saturday as the Orange travel to Louisville for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
