Syracuse senior cross country and track & field standout Pat Dupont and tennis ace Emily Harman were named Syracuse's BIG EAST Male and Female-Scholar Athletes, sponsored by American Eagle Outfitters, on Tuesday by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee. As the Orange's representative, they will receive $2,000 toward graduate studies.
Dupont became the first harrier since Roy Osterhaut in 1952 and 1953 to earn All-American selections in back-to-back seasons with his 37th place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Dupont led the Orange in every race he ran during the 2011 season, earning All-BIG EAST and All-Northeast Regional honors.
On the track, the Fairpont, N.Y. native was named to the All-BIG EAST team after finishing third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the conference outdoor championships last season with a time of 9:02.05.
As a music composition major, Dupont has been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team three times, while earning a spot on the Dean's List in each of his seven semesters at Syracuse. A seven-time member of the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Dupont also earned a spot on the National Academic All-American team in 2011.
Harman has been the Syracuse's number one player since her arrival as a freshman in 2009. The native of Petersburg, W.Va. achieved the highest doubles ranking in program history, checking in at No. 32 last year. This season, she has a current singles record of 5-1.
In the classroom, Harman has been a constant on the Syracuse University Athletic Director's Honor Roll, and is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. Harman is majoring in health and exercise science.
