TEMPE, Ariz. – The back-to-back BIG EAST Champion Syracuse University softball team kicks off the 2012 campaign this Friday at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State.
The Orange opens the season with contests against Texas State and Cal State Northridge on Friday, followed by dates with McNeese State and No. 8 Arizona on Saturday. SU wraps up competition with No. 3 California on Sunday.
Syracuse returns a core group of veterans that have already etched their names into the Syracuse record book. BIG EAST and ECAC Pitcher of the Year Jenna Caira headlines the returning group of players as the all-time leader in wins at SU with 70. She is also just nine strikeouts away from holding school record in that category. Last year, Caira set single-season records for wins with 35, strikeouts with 321, and innings pitched (283.1).
Fellow seniors Lisaira Daniels, Lacey Kohl and Stephanie Watts will provide much of the offense in 2012. Daniels is the all-time leader in batting average and stolen bases at Syracuse. She has an average of .355 while stealing 53 bases in her two years with the Orange. Kohl hit the second most homeruns last season with 12, while Watts has started every game of her career and is the all-time leader in runs scored at Syracuse, crossing the plate 132 times.
Head coach Leigh Ross is one win shy of winning her 150th game at Syracuse in just six years at Syracuse. She has an overall coaching record of 386-321 in her 14 year coaching tenure.
Arizona and Cal mark the first of six ranked teams SU will face that are currently in the Top 25. The Orange will play 17 games against currently ranked opponents, including three teams in the Top 10 (No. 3 Cal, No. 7 Baylor, No. 8 Arizona). The Orange is the first team receiving votes in the ESPN.com Top 25, and the second team receiving votes in the NFCA-USA Today Top 25 poll.
