SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse women's basketball NLI signees Brianna Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Brittney Sykes (Newark, N.J.) were two of 24 high school seniors named 2012 McDonald's All-Americans on Thursday. They are the third and fourth SU signees to have garnered the honor, and the first time the Orange has had multiple McDonald's All-Americans in the same class.
“I am very proud of Brianna and Brittney,” Syracuse head coach Quentin Hillsman said. “They have worked very hard to become two of the top players in the nation and this is a great honor for them and our program. We are looking forward to both making immediate impacts for us next season.”
The McDonald's All-American games will be played on March 28 at the United Center in Chicago. The girls' game will be at 6 p.m. and televised on ESPNU. Butler and Sykes will both play for the East in the East vs. West game.
Butler and Sykes headline a five-person recruiting class signed by Hillsman that is ranked No. 6 nationally by ESPN Hoopgurlz.
Butler, a 6-0 combo guard at Nazareth High School in Brooklyn, is a five-star recruit and is the No. 13 rated player overall in the 2012 by ESPN Hoopgurlz. She is ranked No. 4 among all guards. Originally from King of Prussia, Penn., Butler has led the Lady Kingsmen to a No. 1 ranking in the CHSAA and NYC, in addition to a No. 3 ranking nationally.
Sykes, a 5-9 combo guard at University High School in Newark, a four-star recruit and ranked No. 30 in the 2012 by ESPN Hoopgurlz, No. 9 among guards, while Jumpoff Plus ranks her No. 19 nationally. The dynamic player recently scored her 1,000th career point on Jan. 23 and is averaging 20 points per game this season.
Connecticut (3), Baylor (2), Duke (2), Notre Dame (2) and Texas A&M (2) were the only other programs with multiple signees named to the teams.
Erica Morrow (2007) and Juanita Ward (2005) are the only other Syracuse players to be named McDonald's All-Americans.
