MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A hat trick from Shiann Darkangelo and a career-high 38 saves from Jenesica Drinkwater was not enough as No. 6/6 Mercyhurst eliminated the Syracuse ice hockey team from the CHA Tournament on Friday afternoon in a back and forth battle at the RMU Island Sports Center, 4-3. The Orange finishes the season with a 10-22-3 overall record.
The SU power play set the tone for the squad throughout the contest as the Orange scored two of its goals while on the man advantage, going 2-of-7 for the game. Jacquie Greco assisted on all of Syracuse's goals, a new career high. Mercyhurst was 2-of-6 on the man advantage and won 43-of-83 draws.
The Orange played with a high level of energy from the opening puck drop in the first period, generating scoring chances on goal and taking an early 1-0 lead. After Mercyhurst killed off the front end of a five-on-three Syracuse power play, Greco sent a shot from the point in on goal. The shot was blocked on its way to the cage, but Darkangelo controlled the loose puck and buried it past Pattenden for the score.
Drinkwater helped keep SU in the lead through the frame, making 18 saves, including a post-to-post save on Christine Bestland. The Lakers, however, would break through at the midway mark of the stanza as Kristine Grenier potted her fourth goal of the season as she tucked a low shot inside the left post after a Mercyhurst faceoff win.
The Lakers would then pick up a power play goal of its own with 1:14 left in the period on Bestland was able to beat Drinkwater with a shot from in tight for her 19th goal of the year.
SU continued to pressure the puck throughout the second period as the teams exchanged goals to give Mercyhurst a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe nearly knotted the score at two when a rebound chance off a Caitlin Roach shot from the point.
Bestland would score her second of the afternoon with 8:37 left in the frame as she skated through the SU defense and fired a shot over Drinkwater's blocker.
The Orange would answer with 7:17 left and SU on the power play as Darkangelo netted her second goal of the game. Greco, settling the puck at the point, blasted a shot that was deflected into the air by Lisa Mullan in front of the crease. Darkangelo then waited for the puck to fall before sneaking it past Pattenden.
The Lakers would regain its two-goal edge just 3:36 into the third period as Grenier scored her second of the game with a shot that hit a stick on its way to the goal, fooling Drinkwater and putting Mercyhurst up 4-2.
Syracuse called a timeout after going back on the power play with 7:42 left, and Darkangelo completed the hat trick with a shot from behind the goal line that caromed off the back of Pattenden and into the back of the net.
With SU in the penalty box late in the third period, Syracuse nearly capitalized on a two-on-one shorthanded bid, but Carrie-Mattimoe's shot ricocheted off the right post.
Drinkwater stood her ground at the other end of the ice, making save after save to keep SU in the game, but the Orange could not net the equalizer.
