PRINCETON, N.J. - The Syracuse men's crew kicked off its spring racing season on Saturday with its annual scrimmage at Princeton against the Tigers and Georgetown.
Head Coach Dave Reischman's crew posted strong showings in the 2K, the first event of the day. The Orange varsity eight, ranked No. 14 in the USRowing Coaches Poll, finished second to No. 4 Princeton (6:11.8) with a time of 6:18.5. The Orange finished almost seven seconds ahead of 15th-ranked Georgetown (6:25.4).
“I think the repetition throughout the day helped us and we accomplished what we set out to today,” Reischman said. “We made some lineup changes and we will continue to do that to try to find a little more impulse in our rhythm as we prepare for the Goes Trophy.”
Syracuse's V8 consisted of Isaac Budman (coxswain), Aidan Barrett (stroke), Mike Dietrick (7), Mason Leasure (6), Chris Lutz (5), Chris Bickford (4), Jake Martens (3), Kynan Reelick (2) and Tyler Toporowski (bow).
“Over the next four or five weeks as we progress towards sprints,” Reischman said, “we are going to have to hold a higher cadence down the course.”
The closest race of the day was between Syracuse and Princeton in the second varsity eight, with the Tigers edging out the Orange, 6:19.6 to 6:20.9. The Hoyas finished third in 7:00.3.
In the frosh/novice eight event, the Orange once again finished second to Princeton (6:24.8) and ahead of Georgetown (6:55.3) with a time of 6:29.2.
A race of consisting of SU's second frosh boat, Princeton's third varsity (6:38.8), second frosh (6:42.3), and third varsity lightweight (6:47.3), and Georgetown's second frosh (7:39.9) resulted in a fourth-place finish for the Orange (7:02.0), behind the three Tigers' boats.
This was the fourth-straight year the three crews have met for a scrimmage on Carnegie Lake. After starting the day with the 2K races, the teams followed it with several shorter pieces for the rest of the morning and again in the afternoon.
In two weeks, on April 14, SU hosts Cornell and Navy as it tries to defend its 2011 Goes Trophy victory at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse. The Orange has won the trophy four of the last six years. The Big Red varsity eight is ranked No. 8 to start the season and the Midshipmen are No. 10.
