COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 6/5 Syracuse (2-2) will be on the road versus an opponent ranked in the top five for the second straight contest, as the Orange is slated to face No. 3/4 Maryland (5-1) on Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. The Orange has opened the season with five consecutive match-ups against teams ranked in the top 15.
The contest will be broadcast live on WJPZ 89.1FM in the Syracuse area. Live audio will be available on Orange All Access on SUathletics.com. Subscriptions to Orange All Access are available at daily, monthly and yearly rates.
ROAD WARRIORS
This is the second of four road contests the Orange will face in the month of March. Syracuse used double overtime heroics to defeat No. 4 Florida in Gainesville last Saturday. The Orange will attempt to register back-to-back victories against teams ranked in the top five for the first time in school history when it travels to face the No. 3/4 Terrapins on Saturday. SU will continue its road conquests after hosting Towson on Mar. 13 when the Orange travels to Connecticut and Harvard to conclude March.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse jumped out to an early 4-0 lead versus No. 4 Florida in Gainesville last Saturday, en route to a 12-11 double-overtime triumph. The Orange never trailed in the contest.
After SU claimed the early advantage, the Gators registered seven out of the next 10 goals to storm back and tie the game with 13:20 to play in the second half. SU would launch a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead, before Florida used a run of its own to tie the game with 53 seconds left in regulation.
Both teams were unable to register a decisive tally in the first overtime period, until sophomore Katie Webster found the back of the cage in the double-overtime session to give the Orange its first victory versus a team ranked in the top five since 2006.
Senior Sarah Holden led the Orange with a hat trick, while freshman Devon Collins and Webster registered two goals apiece. Junior Michelle Tumolo led the way with two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Costantino recorded a career-high 13 saves in the win.
SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS
Maryland carries a 5-1 record into the match-up with the Orange. The Terrapins began the 2012 campaign with three decisive victories against William & Mary, Delaware and Penn State, before losing a one-goal decision at No. 5 Duke. The Terps rebounded after the loss to the Blue Devils, beating No. 6 Virginia and Hofstra last week.
Katie Schwarzmann leads the Maryland offense, registering team-high marks in goals scored (19) and points (22). Schwarzmann ranks third in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in goals per game (3.17), and is sixth in the conference in points per game (3.67). She leads the league in game-winning goals, registering the decisive tally on three occasions.
Karri Ellen Johnson offers a balanced attacked for the Terrapins, ranking sixth and seventh in the ACC in assists per game (1.17) and goals per game (2.33), respectively.
Brittany Dipper anchors a strong Maryland defense in goal. She has played 244 minutes this season, registering a 7.00 goals-against average and a .440 save percentage.
Cathy Reese is in her sixth season at the helm in College Park. A former Maryland standout, Reese has accumulated a 134-41 mark as head coach. Reese has led the Terrapins to three ACC Championships and the National Championship in 2010. She has been named ACC Coach of the Year four times and IWLCA National Coach of the Year in 2010.
SERIES RECORD
Syracuse has never beaten Maryland, as the Terrapins hold an 11-0 series advantage. The Orange last faced UM during the 2011 season, when SU lost a 7-5 decision against the top-ranked Terrapins in College Park, Md.
Perhaps the most historic match-up between the two schools came in 2010, when SU and Maryland met in the NCAA Semifinals. The Orange used a brief second half run to cut the Terrapin lead to three, but UM advanced with a 14-5 victory and went on to win the national championship.
The Orange and Terrapins first met during the 1998 season, when Maryland recorded a 21-7 triumph in Syracuse's first-ever game.
