QUEENS, N.Y. – It was a home run derby at the Red Storm Softball Field on Sunday Afternoon as #25 Syracuse (21-9, 2-1) smacked six home runs to help the Orange defeat St. John's (13-21, 2-3) 12-6 and take the series 2-1.
The game featured nine round-trippers in total, including seven two-run shots. Every run scored today was via the long ball. In the three games combined this weekend, the Orange and the Red Storm hit 18 home runs.
As she did in her first plate appearance yesterday, Jasmine Watson took SJU starting pitcher Ashley Beza deep, this time a two-run bomb to give SU a 2-0 lead. Yesterday Watson hit a grand slam in the top of the first.
The Red Storm however, took Jenna Caira out of the park twice in the bottom of the first inning. Kristee Cady and Erin Burner each blasted two-run homers as SJU led 4-2 after one inning of action.
Stephanie Watts then smacked the games fourth two-run home run in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 4-4. After Lisaira Daniels drew a walk, Watts brought Daniels home with her first long ball of the season.
The games fifth two-run round-tripper came in the bottom of the second as SJU's Chrissy Montez put the Red Storm ahead 6-4. Carey-Leigh Thomas then hit the sixth four-bagger of the game (the first solo HR) to lead off the top of the third and brought SU within one at 6-5.
The score would remain the same for the next two and a half innings until Watts put the Orange ahead 7-6 with her second two-run long ball of the game in the top of the sixth. It was the games seventh home run and the sixth two-run shot.
Still in the sixth, Watson drew her third walk of the contest, and Thomas reached via a free pass as well. They were both brought home as Julie Wambold cracked a three-run blast to break the game open at 10-6. It was Syracuse's fifth homer of the day and the eighth of the game.
Lisaira Daniels added another two-run home run in the top of the seventh to double up the Red Storm 12-6. It was her team-leading seventh long ball of the season. Daniels finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI's and four runs scored.
Watts was 2-for-4 with a team-high four RBI's, while Watson was 1-for-1 with two RBI's and four walks. On the weekend, Watson was 4-for-6 with two home runs, six runs batted in and six walks.
Stacy Kuwik was exceptional in relief, pitching six innings while allowing just three hits with four strikeouts, including a span of retiring 10 straight St. John's batters. She did not allow a run for the final five innings.
The Orange is back in action next weekend when Syracuse hosts Seton Hall for a trio of games at the SU Softball Complex. There will be a doubleheader on Friday beginning at noon, followed by one game on Saturday at noon.
