SU Sweeps Seton Hall in Walk-off Fashion

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Carey-Leigh Thomas hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Syracuse University softball team (23-9, 4-1) sweep a doubleheader from Seton Hall (18-20, 0-7) on Friday at the SU Softball Stadium.
Behind back-to-back round-trippers in the bottom of the sixth inning from Jasmine Watson and Lacey Kohl, the Orange won game one 2-0, while Thomas propelled SU to a 5-3 victory in game two.
Jenna Caira registered 11 strikeouts in the first game of the day, while Stacy Kuwik had a career-high 12 in game two. Neither of them allowed a run during the doubleheader.
Game One:
Caira (15-3) went the distance, scattering just two hits over seven innings and striking out 11 batters while walking just one. Watson and Kohl hit their long balls in the bottom of the sixth inning for the games only runs.
The Orange had four hits, as both Lisaira and Shirley Daniels roped singles, along with the two hits from Watson and Kohl. L. Daniels extended her streak of reaching base safely to 16 games.
Game Two:
Julie Wambold got the Orange on the board first with a two run blast in the home half of the fourth inning. It was the freshman's seventh home run of the year and her third in the past four games.
SU then tacked on another run in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. Kelly Saco drew a leadoff walk and was brought home with a two out double by Stephanie Watts.
The Pirates tied the contest up in the top of the sixth inning with a three run home run off relief pitcher Lindsay Taylor, but Kuwik would then shut down SHU for the remaining three innings.
Watts led off the ninth with an infield single, and three batters later, Thomas left the park to right center for the dramatic walk off victory.
L. Daniels' hit in the top of the first inning extended her on base streak to 17 games. The Orange has now won 13 of its last 14 games.
Kuwik had a career day with the 12 strikeouts, along with a career-best eight innings pitched. She allowed seven hits and did not issue any walks.
