SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It was a dominant pitching performance from Jenna Caira and Stacy Kuwik as the two combined to strikeout 30 batters and lead the Syracuse University softball team (28-9) to a pair of wins (6-1, 2-0) against Binghamton (15-19) on Thursday afternoon at the SU Softball Complex.
Caira fanned 13 Bearcats in the first game, while Kuwik was sensational in the second game and set a new career-high with 17 strikeouts. Caira improved to 18-3 and has won 15 in a row, while Kuwik is now 8-3. Kuwik has struck out 37 batters in her last three starts.
Game One: Syracuse 6, Binghamton 1
SU scored all six of its runs with two outs, and Carey-Leigh Thomas hit a three run home run in the fifth inning to lift Syracuse past Binghamton, 6-1.
The Orange applied instant pressure as Lacey Kohl's single scored Stephanie Watts from second base in the top of the first inning. Kohl advance to second on the throw home, and eventually came in to score courtesy of two wild pitches by Binghamton's pitcher Kristen Emerling.
SU led 2-0 until the fifth inning when Binghamton cut the deficit in half, but Thomas broke the game open with her team-high ninth home run in the bottom half of the inning. Her three run shot also scored Kohl and Emily Thompson.
Shirley Daniels tacked on SU's sixth run as she reached with a leadoff double in the sixth, and then scored three batters later as her sister Lisaira Daniels knocked her in with an RBI single.
That would be plenty of run support for Caira, who went the distance and finished with a season-high 13 K's. L. Daniels reached base safely for the 21st consecutive game and now owns the longest streak in the BIG EAST.
Game Two: Syracuse 2, Binghamton 0
A career-day in the circle from Stacy Kuwik and a two-run home run by Julie Wambold proved to be the difference as Syracuse completed the sweep of Binghamton by a score of 2-0.
Kuwik struck out a career-best 17 Bearcats and allowed just three hits in the complete game effort. The first 14 Binghamton outs were recorded by a strikeout from Kuwik.
The game's only runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth as Wambold smacked her ninth round-tripper of the season. Her two run bomb scored Thomas who singled up the middle in the pervious at bat.
Thomas and Wambold, each with nine home runs, have tied the Syracuse freshman record for single-season homers, set by Jasmine Watson last season.
The Orange, winners of eight in a row and 18-of-19, looks to continue its momentum with three huge conference games this weekend at Notre Dame. Saturdayis a doubleheader with first pitch at 12:00 p.m., while Sunday's game begins at 11:00 a.m.
