SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Two clutch solo home runs propelled the Syracuse University softball team (30-10, 7-2) past Notre Dame (21-13, 5-3), 3-2, in come-back fashion on Sunday afternoon at Melissa Cook Stadium.
Down to its final three outs in the top of the seventh inning, Veronica Grant laced her first home run of the season to tie the game at two, and then Julie Wambold hit her team-high 10th long ball in the eighth for the game-winning run.
"We got ourselves out of a lot of tough situations today," head coach Leigh Ross said. "It shows that we have a group of mentally tough girls and that will pay off in the end."
The Orange took 2-of-3 from the Fighting Irish and has now reached the 30-win plateau for the fourth season in a row. Grant was 3-for-4 with two RBI's on Sunday and capped off her monster weekend at the dish where she recorded seven hits in 11 at-bats and five RBI's.
Syracuse recorded three hits in the first inning, but was unable to capitalize on its bases loaded opportunity. The Orange though, would strike first as Morgan Nandin logged a one out single and was brought home two batters later on an RBI double by Grant in the second inning.
Notre Dame loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning with one out, but Syracuse limited the damage to just one run, highlighted by Lisaira Daniels throwing out the potential go-ahead run at home as Lacey Kohl blocked the plate and applied the tag.
Notre Dame once again loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out courtesy of two SU fielding errors. Jenna Caira then locked in and recorded a strikeout for the second out, and followed that by winning a nine pitch at-bat with Emilee Koerner and ultimately got her to fly out.
Notre Dame took a 2-1 lead in the sixth as leadoff batter Amy Buntin singled and eventually scored, but Grant knotted the game with one swing of the bat as her ball smacked the scoreboard in left center field.
After Caira retired the Fighting Irish in the bottom of the seventh, Wambold roped the game-winner off the foul pole in left field for the decisive run. The Fighting Irish was unable to generate any threat in the bottom of the eighth.
Caira pitched a complete game while allowing just two hits and striking out three. She is 19-4 on the season.
The Orange is back in action this Wednesday with a twin-bill against Pittsburgh at the SU Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
