BOSTON - The No. 13 Syracuse men's crew varsity eight defeated No. 12 Boston University and No. 14 Columbia to win the Conlan Cup on Saturday morning on the Charles River.
The Orange varsity eight, consisting of coxswain Isaac Budmen, Aidan Barrett (stroke), Mike Dietrick (7), Chris Bickford (6), Chris Lutz (5), Kynan Reelick (4), Mac Zink (3), Mason Leasure (2) and Jame Martens (bow), finished in 6:01.7, just over a second ahead of the Terriers (6:02.8) and eight seconds ahead of the Lions (6:09.8).
“I thought the guys did a nice job learning from last week,” head coach Dave Reischman said. “This week we got out to the early lead, BU came back and made it a one-seat boat race through the middle 1000 and we kept our composure and executed the final 500 better than last week.”
The Orange won the Conlan Cup, awarded annually to the victor between SU and BU, for the sixth time in the last seven years. The Terriers snapped a five-year Orange run last season. SU has now won 15 of the 26 years the trophy has been awarded.
The Orange second varsity eight won its race as well, finishing in 6:08.2 while the Terriers finished second (6:10.3) and the BU third varsity came in third (6:26.0).
“The JV was solid and did a much better job moving the boat in the first 500 today,” Reischman said.
Syracuse's freshman eight finished second to the BU boat (6:17.9) with a time of 6:24.6. Columbia was third in 6:25.1.
The Orange second frosh eight finished second in a race that featured Holy Cross and Harvard boats.
The Orange will return to action at the Eastern Sprints, the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges's championship, on May 13 at Regatta Point on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The Packard Cup against Dartmouth on May 20 will follow, leading up to the IRA Regatta on May 31-June 2.
