SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse men's senior rower Mike Dietrick is one of 23 athletes invited to the USRowing Men's Under 23 National Team Sweep Camp, to be held in Seattle, Wash. at the University of Washington's Conibear Shellhouse.
The camp, coached by Luke McGee and Paul Cooke, will select the men's eight and men's four that will compete at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships, July 11-15 in Trakai, Lithuania. In addition, the camp may select the men's four with coxswain that will compete at the USRowing U23 National Team Trials on June 24-27 in West Windsor, N.J. A full team roster will be announced by July 1.
“This is a fantastic accomplishment for Mike,” SU head coach Dave Reischman said. “He has worked really hard to become fit and to learn the subtleties of moving boats. Our entire program is excited for him and eager to support his move to the next level.”
Dietrick, an Orchard Park, N.Y. native, is a four-year member of Syracuse crew and a three-year member of Reischman's varsity eight, rowing in the seven seat in the first three regattas this spring. He helped lead the Orange to a victory in the Conlan Cup last weekend and will lead SU into the Eastern Sprints on May 13.
The United States won four medals at the 2011 World Rowing U23 Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands, including a gold medal by the men's eight, stroked by 2011 SU rowing alumnus Mike Gennaro.
The U23 National Team serves as the feeder program for the Senior National Team, which will be looking for gold at the Olympics this summer in London.
USRowing's Women's U23 National Team Camp will be held in Syracuse on May 29-June 26 and coached by SU women's head coach Justin Moore (sweep), Reischman (sculling) and assistant coach Shawn Bagnall (sweep).
