Game Notes
STORRS, Conn. – History looks to be made this weekend when the Syracuse University softball team (35-12, 12-4) travels to play Connecticut (21-23, 9-10) for a three game set at the Burrill Family Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and one game on Sunday, both beginning at 12:00 p.m.
Ace pitcher Jenna Caira is 14 strikeouts away from becoming the first player in BIG EAST history to reach the 1,000 career strikeouts. She has 411 more K's than any other pitcher in Syracuse history, and also owns the single-season strikeout mark with 321 which she set last season.
The reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year has been dealing of late. She has reached double-digit strikeouts in her last three starts and has struck out 58 batters in her last five appearances. Two starts ago, Caira pitcher her third career no-hitter in a 1-0 victory against Rutgers. She is 22-6 on the season with a 1.63 ERA.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE:
Syracuse continues its seven-game road trip with these three games at Connecticut. This weekend marks the final BIG EAST road games for the Orange this season and SU has a 9-3 record away from home.
SYRACUSE SPLITS AT DEPAUL:
After dropping the first of two games at DePaul on Wednesday, Syracuse rallied in the seventh inning of game two and eventually pulled off a 5-3 nine inning victory to salvage a series split.
Veronica Grant came to the plate in the seventh inning against DePaul with SU trailing by one and proceeded to hit a two-run home-run that put Syracuse ahead 3-2. It seemed like déjà vu as Grant provided the same dramatics against Notre Dame two weeks ago with a game-tying homer in the seventh inning.
DePaul would score a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Stephanie Watts played the role of hero in the top of the ninth inning with a two-run blast to give Syracuse a 5-3 victory.
WATTS SETTING MORE RECORDS:
Watts continues to climb the list as one of the all-time greats for the Orange. Already as the career leader in runs scored, Watts will set the record for most at-bats in her first plate appearance against the Huskies. She is also just five starts away from becoming the all-time leader in games played and started at Syracuse.
The list continues for Watts as she has also hit the third most home runs in program history, the fourth most runs batted in, and is fifth for both hits and doubles.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES:
Amy Vaughn paces the offense with a .319 batting average. She is the BIG EAST leader with 13 long balls and also leads her team with 44 hits and 41 runs batted in.
Kiki Saveriano carries the load for the pitching staff. She has an 11-14 record with a team-best 3.37 ERA in 145.1 innings pitched.
