INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Syracuse women's varsity eight crew finished second in the grand final of the BIG EAST Double Dual on Saturday in Indianapolis, Ind., just .6 seconds behind No. 15 Notre Dame. All four Orange boats made the grand finals following morning heats as Justin Moore's team posted a strong showing in the final tune-up before the BIG EAST Championship on May 12-13 in Mercer, N.J.
Syracuse nearly matched the 15th-ranked and eight-time defending BIG EAST Champion Notre Dame stroke for stroke in the V8 grand final, finishing a bow behind the Fighting Irish (6:41.0) in a time of 6:41.6. Iowa (6:47.6) finished second and Louisville (6:51.0), the defending BIG EAST V8 gold medalist, was fourth.
“The technical capacities of the crews were really tested by the conditions today,” Moore said. “Notre Dame was really strong in the second 500 and I give them a lot of credit, the way our athletes responded and made final shifts over the final 300 meters really put pressure on them.”
The Orange V8 consisted of Allison Todd (coxswain), Maggie McCrudden (stroke), Anna Kaszycki (7), Miranda Williams (6), Emma Basher (5), Rebecca Soja (4), Tiffany Macon (3), Caroline Habjan (2) and Emma Karpowicz (bow).
Heading into the conference championship in two weeks, SU showed considerable time gains against its BIG EAST foes. Louisville won the V8 at the 2011 BIG EAST Championship, finishing 2.8 seconds ahead of second-place Notre Dame and 11.1 seconds ahead of the fifth-place Orange.
SU finished second in the grand final in the other three events it was entered in, the second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four.
SU's 2V8 finished 1.1 seconds behind the Irish and with open water gaps on Iowa and Louisville. The V4 finished 10.8 seconds behind Notre Dame, 9.4 seconds head of Iowa and 10.6 ticks ahead of Louisville. In the 2V4, SU finished 11.4 seconds behind the Irish.
All races were held on the 2,000-meter course at the Indianapolis Rowing Center on Eagle Creek Reservoir. The regatta was held in cold and windy conditions. Racing was suspended temporarily during morning preliminaries due to lightning.
The BIG EAST Double Dual serves as a preview of the BIG EAST Championship with SU, Louisville, Notre Dame, Rutgers, West Virginia all racing, in addition to Iowa.
