USA Today All-USA Girls Basketball Teams
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse women's basketball 2012 signee Brittney Sykes has been named to the USA Today All-USA High School Girls Basketball Team. The 5-9 guard from Newark, N.J. was named to the second team, as USA Today named three five-member teams.
Sykes, who played in the McDonald's All-American Game in Chicago in March along with fellow SU signee Brianna Butler, averaged 18.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 3.4 steals and 2.4 blocks per game for University High School in Newark this season. She was named to the New Jersey All-State and All-Essex County first teams.
She finished her high school career with 1,234 points, all while ranking in the top 25 academically in her class and plays bass drum and trumpet in the school band.
ESPN Hoopgurlz ranks Sykes as the No. 30 player in the 2012 recruiting class and the ninth-ranked guard. It lists her strengths as athleticism, getting to the rim, finishing in traffic, and calls her an elite on-ball defender.
Sykes plans to enroll in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse.
Sykes and Butler (5-11 guard, Brooklyn, N.Y.), who both signed National Letters of Intent in November, were the third and fourth McDonald's All-Americans in SU women's basketball history. They are part of a five-person 2012 class signed by Quentin Hillsman that is ranked No. 6 nationally by ESPN Hoopgurlz. They will be joined on the Carrier Dome hardwood by 5-9 guard Cornelia Fondren (Memphis, Tenn.), 6-1 forward Taylor Ford (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and 6-1 forward and Miss Georgia Basketball Pachiyaanna Roberts (Powder Springs, Ga.).
