SYRACUSE - Syracuse women's crew heads to Mercer Lake, N.J. seeking its third BIG EAST Championship and first since 2003.
Live streaming video will be available free of charge at the BIG EAST Championship Central website (link above). The site will also feature interviews with coaches and student-athletes.
Racing begins on Sunday morning with time trials in six different events starting at 8 a.m. The time trials will feature boats leaving the start in 30-second intervals. The Orange is entering boats in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight and varsity four. Those time trials will determine the petite and grand final lineups. The finals are slated to begin at 11 a.m. with the awards ceremony to follow the V8 finals, which will take place last.
Justin Moore's Orange comes into the weekend with a squad that has shown steady improvement over the course of the spring season and is coming off a pair of strong showings.
In its last race, on April 28, the Orange V8 finished a very close second, finishing just .6 seconds behind eight-time defending conference champion and No. 15 Notre Dame at the BIG EAST Double Dual in Indianapolis. SU was finished 9.4 seconds ahead of Louisville, the next closest conference foe in the grand final. All four Orange boats made the grand finals in the final tune-up before the BIG EAST Championship.
SU showed considerable time gains against its BIG EAST foes. Louisville won the V8 at the 2011 BIG EAST Championship, finishing 2.8 seconds ahead of second-place Notre Dame and 11.1 seconds ahead of the fifth-place Orange.
Two weeks prior to the Double Dual, on April 14 the Orange V8 finished third in a strong field at the Charles River Challenge in Boston. SU finished 4.3 seconds behind No. 12 Radcliffe and 2.9 seconds behind Dartmouth after the Orange made a strong shift in the final third of the race. The V4 posted a second-place finish that day.
The Orange goes into the weekend as the third-highest “receiving votes” team in the CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll. The Fighting Irish rank 15th in this week's poll.
Syracuse's V8 ranks 24th in this week's cMax computer ratings, behind Notre Dame at No. 17 and ahead of Louisville at No. 32.
