WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The Syracuse women's rowing team concluded its 2012 season on a high note Sunday as the Orange finished second at the BIG EAST Championship at Lake Mercer, N.J. The Orange took gold in the varsity four, while claiming second in the grand finals of three of the other events in which it entered boats, including the varsity eight.
“It was very good racing across the board today,” Head Coach Justin Moore said. “We rowed to or exceeded our seeding throughout the day. The women showed great poise in tight racing.”
No. 15 Notre Dame took first in four of five point-scoring grand finals to win its ninth-straight BIG EAST Championship with 111 points, edging the Orange (97) by 14 points. Louisville finished third, 10 points behind SU, and Georgetown was fourth.
It is the Orange's highest overall finish since coming in second in 2009. SU was fourth last season and third in 2010.
The Syracuse V4 of coxswain Kristina Herb, Amy Ludovici, Ashley Marsh, Laura Adams and Gina Biascochea finished its race in 7:29.9, beating second-place Notre Dame (7:31.4) by 1.5 seconds to become the first Syracuse boat to win a BIG EAST title since the novice eight in 2009 and the first varsity boat since the 2005 varsity eight.
After Notre Dame took an early lead off the start, Herb's crew made its move at the midway point of the race and within 200 meters opened a one-length lead on the Irish. The Orange staved off a late charge to win by a half a length.
“The four had a really exceptional row,” Moore said. “The Notre Dame four has beaten a lot of very good crews and it took a very aggressive move in the middle of the race by our crew to beat them.”
The Orange V8 gave the Irish all it could handle in the day's marquee event, finishing in 6:34.056, just over twoseconds behind Notre Dame (6:31.724) and almost two seconds ahead of third-place Louisville (7:35.764), last year's V8 champion.
Also posting second-place wins in points races for the Orange were the second and third varsity eights.
Senior V8 coxswain Allison Todd and sophomore V8 stroke Maggie McCrudden were named All-BIG EAST First Team, while senior V8 rowers Emma Karpowicz and Tiffany Macon took home Second-Team All-BIG EAST honors.
