SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Alyssa Constantino made a save with no time remaining to seal No. 2/2 Syracuse's (16-2) 7-6 victory against No. 16/15 Georgetown (9-8) in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Friday, May 3 at the Carrier Dome. The Orange has now won 15 consecutive games.
Syracuse advances to the championship game where it will face No. 12/10 Loyola on Saturday, May 5 at 1 p.m. It will be the Orange's fourth appearance in the finals and its first since 2010. The Greyhounds advanced to the finals with an 11-9 victory against No. 6/6 Notre Dame in the first semifinal.
Trailing 4-3 at the break, the Orange recorded three straight goals to open the second half. Senior Sarah Holden and sophomore tandem Alyssa Murray and Katie Webster each had a score during that stretch.
The fourth-seeded Hoyas would cut SU's lead to one on two occasions, but could not overcome the early second stanza barrage by the Orange.
“I thought our players responded well when it was a close game,” said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. “Mistakes were made both ways, but we made the plays when we needed to. We stuck together and held on for a nice W.”
Georgetown held top-seeded Syracuse to a season-low three goals in the first half. It also marked the second time the Orange was down at intermission. The Hoyas built an early advantage behind two tallies from Caroline Tarzian and a Kelsi Bozel score.
After being held scoreless until the 8:03 mark in the first half, the Orange recorded three consecutive goals to knot the game at 3-3. Murray recorded the first SU goal on a free position attempt. Junior Bridget Daley scored on another free position try to cut the deficit to one before junior Michelle Tumolo, the 2012 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year, tied the game with a goal with 5:55 remaining in the half.
The Hoyas retook the lead behind a Kristen Coleman goal with 2:51 left in the first frame to give them a one-goal advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.
Syracuse outshot Georgetown, 20-14, and won 11-of-15 draw controls. The Hoyas picked up 11 ground balls to nine for the Orange. Costantino and Hoyas' goalkeeper Barb Black each recorded six saves.
Admission to Saturday's championship game is $6 for adults and $4 for youths (17 and under)/seniors. Admission is free for students with ID from BIG EAST schools and for toddlers/infants (5 and under). Parking will be available in the Dome West lots for $5.
