SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse finished second in the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches (IWLCA) poll after advancing to the national championship game for the first time in school history. It marks the Orange's highest ranking in the final poll since the program began in 1998. Prior to this season, Syracuse's best finish in the final rankings was No. 4, which it did in 2008 and 2010.
The Orange, which held the No. 4 spot in the last regular-season poll, received 377 points. National champion Northwestern was ranked No. 1, receiving all 20 first-place votes. National semifinalists Florida and Maryland finished third and fourth, respectively.
Syracuse was one of four BIG EAST schools among the final top 20, which ranked second among all conferences. Loyola was ranked No. 7, followed by Notre Dame at No. 9 and Georgetown at No. 17.
The Orange posted a record of 19-4 in 2012, setting a single-season record for wins. SU won a school-record 15 consecutive games and went undefeated in BIG EAST play during the regular season for the second time in program history.
Syracuse earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where it defeated Dartmouth and North Carolina to advance to the national semifinals for the third time in five years. In the second-largest comeback in tournament history, the Orange overcame a seven-goal deficit to defeat No. 1 Florida in double overtime to reach the championship game where it lost to Northwestern, 8-6.
