SYRACUSE – Syracuse University senior rower Mike Dietrick was named the male winner of the 2012 Soladay Award at last week's 'Cuse Awards.
The SU athletic department considers the award its most prestigious that a student-athlete can receive. It is awarded to one male and one female each year on the criteria of academic achievement, athletic achievement, service to the community and leadership.
Receiving the honor with the Orchard Park native was women's tennis player Emily Harman.
The award is named in honor of former Associate Athletic Director Doris Soladay. All four criteria account for 25 percent of the entire score for determining recipients.
Dietrick is a three-year member of the Orange's varsity eight boat which was ranked No. 7 nationally in last season's final USRowing Collegiate Poll, helped lead SU to its first IRA Grand Final in 30 years, and is currently ranked 11th the season. Rowing in the seven seat this spring, he recently led Syracuse to a victory in the Conlan Cup in Boston.
Last month, Dietrick was one of 23 athletes nationally to be selected for the USRowing U23 National Team Sweep Camp, to be held this summer in Washington.
Dietrick graduated Summa Cum Laude in three years from the Whitman School with a degree in Accounting. He is nearing completion in the Master of Science in Accounting in the Lubin School.
Some of Dietrick's campus and community involvement includes serving as a tutor for undergraduate accounting students, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, assisting in the organizing of the Tracy Haplin Memorial Fun Walk and volunteering with the crew team annually at the Ed Smith Elementary Spaghetti Dinner.
Head Coach Dave Reischman has relied heavily on Dietrick and other senior leaders to develop a culture of hard work and “changing everyone's idea of what is possible.” Through his leadership, the Orange has shown steady improvement from the fall to spring season as they near post-season racing this month.
Dietrick and the Orange are currently preparing for the conference championship, the Eastern Sprints, held May 13 in Worcester, Mass.
