SYRACUSE - The USRowing U23 Women's National Team Camp, hosted by Syracuse University and rowing head coaches Justin Moore and Dave Reischman, has received a donation of 29 $100 gift cards from Tops Friendly Markets, one each for the rowers and coxswains pursuing a U23 World Championship this summer, as well as donations of in-kind healthy food.
“Great nutrition is absolutely essential in high-performance athletics, Moore said. “The challenge that the women we are training face is that they are not funded by our national governing body because those resources are going to the Olympic team this year. What is great about the Syracuse area is that people are rallying behind these athletes to take them into their homes and now Tops is coming on board to make it possible for them to have outstanding athletic nutrition as well.
“We are a proud to support the U23 Women's National Team as they compete to participate in the world championships,” said Kathy Allen, Tops manager of community relations. “At Tops, we know that healthy eating is important to living a healthy lifestyle. We encourage our shoppers to make healthy food choices through our NuVal Nutritional Scoring System, where the product on our shelves is scored from 1 – 100, with the higher the score, the better the nutritional value.”
In March of 2011, Tops launched The NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System to help customers make informed nutritional choices in an instant by giving foods on Tops' shelves a NuVal™ Score from 1 to 100; the higher the score, the better the nutrition. Scores are posted on Tops' shelves and signs throughout the store, making it easy for customers to compare the overall nutrition of the foods they buy at a glance. Tops' customers can look for scores with the NuVal™ system's trademark blue hexagons on the shelf tags of more than 18,000 food items throughout the store.
The U23 training camp runs from May 29-June 26 in Syracuse and will be used to select the Open Women's 8+ and 4x to compete at the U23 World Championships in Trakai, Lithuania on July 11-15. The camp will also select Open Women's 4-, 2-, and 2x to compete at the U23 Trails in Mercer, N.J. on June 24-27.
Moore, SU's women's head coach, is serving as the head sweep coach, while Reischman, the Orange's men's head coach, is serving as the head sculling coach. Assisting them are SU men's assistant coach Shawn Bagnall (sweep) and Cornell women's head coach Hilary Gehman (sculling).
“I know that this contribution is going to make a meaningful difference as these women pursue their goals of a U23 World Championship,” Moore said. “We the coaching staff, as representatives of USRowing, are extremely grateful that Tops has decided to support us.”
