SYRACUSE, N.Y. - For the 13th Olympics in a row, Syracuse men's rowing will be represented as Mike Gennaro '11 is an alternate on the USRowing Olympic Team.
Gennaro is one of three alternates for the men's Olympic team and is traveling to Great Britain with the full USRowing squad. Rowing begins on Eton Dorney on July 28 and runs through Aug. 4. Finals in all events will be held Aug. 1-4.
"Mike and his fellow alternate, Ty Otto, are the two youngest guys on the squad," SU head coach Dave Reischman said. "This is a great opportunity for them to observe how the best rowers in the world handle the pressure of performing at the most important race in the world. It's an invaluable opportunity for a very talented young rower who will have more Olympic opportunities in his future. We are honored that our program could play a part in his development."
Syracuse crew has had an alumnus rowing, as an alternate, or a coach in every Olympics since 1964. 12 rower and five coaches have represented the Orange in that span.
Gennaro and his partner, Robert Otto, finished second in the men's pair at the USRowing Olympic Trials in West Windsor, N.J. on June 14. The Gennaro-Otto boat finished in a time of 7:19.033 in the final, behind only the boat Silas Stafford and Tom Peszek, which earned the U.S.'s bid for the event in London.
Prior to competing at the Olympic Trials in the pair, Gennaro trained at the California Rowing Club in Oakland, Calif. with the U.S. men's eight hopefuls under the direction of USRowing Coach Mike Teti.
A 2011 SU alum, Gennaro has won five total international medals in the last three summers. He is a three-time medalist at the U23 World Championships, including one gold, and won two golds at the Pan-American Games in the pair and 8+. He sat in the stroke seat for the U.S.'s gold medal-winning men's 8+ at the 2011 U23 World's in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The Havertown, Pa. native sat in the stroke seat for Reischman's varsity eight at Syracuse for three seasons, leading the Orange to a Grand Final appearance at the IRA in 2010.
Other former Syracuse student-athletes competing and coaching at the Olympics include Carmelo Anthony (men's basketball - USA), Jim Boeheim (men's basketball assistant coach - USA), Natalie Mastracci (women's rowing – Canada) and Shannon Taylor (field hockey - USA).
