LONDON - Syracuse alum Shannon Taylor scored with 7:05 left in the first half and it proved to be the game-winner as USA Field Hockey defeated Argentina, the No. 2 ranked team in the world, 1-0, at the Olympic Games on Tuesday evening.
It was a massive win for Taylor and Team USA (1-1) as they move into a tie for second place in Group B with three points. The U.S., ranked No. 10 in the world, returns to action on Thursday at 5:45 a.m. ET against Australia, the No. 7 ranked team.
Taylor made a beautiful tip-in on a great pass from Michelle Vittese at the top of the circle to score the game's lone goal in the 28th minute. The Americans controlled the play for long stretches of the game, while the defense, led by goalkeeper Amy Tran-Swenson, frustrated the Argentina attack.
Scoring big goals against Argentina is nothing new to Taylor. The 2008 Orange All-American scored a key goal in the USA's 4-2 upset victory over the then No. 1 ranked Argentines in the Pan American Games gold medal game last October – the win that qualified the U.S. for the Olympics.
The USA, Argentina (1-1) and Germany (1-0), who the Americans lost to in the opener, 2-1, all have three points in Group B, while New Zealand leads with six points at 2-0.
