SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange fans now have a chance to support the women's lacrosse team in the 2012 Inside Lacrosse Laxie Awards! After recording its best season in program history, which included a trip to the NCAA National Championship game, Syracuse has been nominated in three categories: Game of the Year, Division I Women's Player of the Year and Clutch Performer of the Year.
Fans can vote for their favorite moments from last season and their favorite Orange players at: www.InsideLacrosse.com/laxies. Voters will also have the opportunity to win prizes as a winner will be selected daily until the polls close on September 30.
Syracuse earned a nod for "Game of the Year" after one of its most memorable performances in the NCAA semifinals against Florida. After trailing the Gators by seven goals, Syracuse fought back and Sarah Holden tied the game at 13-13 with 30 seconds left in regulation, forcing overtime. Florida had seemed to have scored with nine seconds left during the first overtime period but the call was overturned due to an illegal stick, forcing a second sudden-victory overtime period. Holden came up big for the Orange again and scored the game-winning goal.
Syracuse's Michelle Tumolo received two nominations including "Division I Women's Player of the Year." Tumolo notched 52 goals and recorded 43 assists last season. Her 95 career-high points ranked sixth in the nation. The Orange captain was also honored with a slew of awards and honors including: First-team All-America honors, IWLCA National Attacker of the Year, BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year, BIG EAST First Team. In addition, she was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy.
Tumolo was also nominated for "Clutch Performer of the Year" after her performance in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals against North Carolina. With less than three minutes to play and the Orange trailing 16-14, Tumolo scored one of her four goals in the game to bring the Orange within one. The Orange then tied it up as Tumolo assisted on a goal with 39 seconds remaining. With five seconds on the clock, Tumolo scored the game-winning goal, allowing the Orange to continue on to the Final Four.
Fans also have the opportunity to vote for and support past Orange men's lacrosse players as Jovan Miller is nominated for "Lacrosse Personality of the Year" and Cody Jamieson is nominated for "NLL Player of the Year", "Individual Game Performance of the Year" and "Clutch Performer of the Year."
