After enjoying its most successful season in school history last season, the 2012-13 version of the Syracuse women's lacrosse team began fall practice this week with one goal in mind – winning the program's first national championship.
"The day after (the championship game), I wanted to practice," said Syracuse senior Michelle Tumolo. "We were so excited to be there but we weren't okay with losing and just being in the national championship game."
Syracuse returns 10 starters and several key reserves from last year's team that won a school-record 19 games and advanced to the national championship game for the first time in the program's history. SU set a school record by winning 15 consecutive games and went undefeated in BIG EAST regular-season play for the second time in school history.
Syracuse earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where it defeated Dartmouth and North Carolina to advance to the national semifinals for the third time in five years. In the second-largest comeback in tournament history, the Orange overcame a seven-goal deficit to defeat No. 1 Florida in double overtime to reach the championship game where it lost to Northwestern, 8-6.
The veterans, who came so close claiming the first national title for an SU women's program, will be joined by a freshman class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation by Inside Lacrosse. The added depth the group brings to an experienced lineup has everyone eager for preparations for the 2013 campaign to get started.
"We're excited to get out there," Tumolo said. "I can see it in everyone's eyes, everyone's passion, everyone's heart, everyone's energy."
The Orange begins its fall schedule on Sept. 29. Syracuse hosts its play date on Oct. 6 before traveling to Navy on Oct. 13. SU concludes its fall schedule on Oct. 20 at Cornell and Oct. 21 at Manhasset, N.Y.
