SU Defeated at No. 4 Cornell, 8-1

ITHACA, NY – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team was defeated, 8-1, at No. 4 Cornell tonight. Senior Jacquie Greco scored the lone goal for the Orange (10-11-1, 4-3-1 CHA) in the first period. Junior Jenesica Drinkwater posted 24 saves in net. Syracuse is now 4-6-1 in the road and 6-8-0 in nonconference games this season.
The Big Red scored 2:27 minutes into the contest, off of a tally by Erin Barley-Maroney. Brianne Jenner then scored back-to-back goals 2:17 apart to improve Cornell's lead to 3-0.
Greco countered Jenner's second goal with one of her own 20 seconds later at 7:57 off of assists from Shiann Darkangelo and Melissa Piacentini. Greco is on a two game goal scoring streak while Piacentini now has registered an assist in two straight games. In the past four games, Greco has three goals while Piacentini has four in the past four games.
Cornell capped off its five-goal first period with tallies by Jessica Campbell and Jillian Saulnier.
The Orange defense held strong until the 14:30 of the second frame, when Hayleigh Cudmore extended the Big Red's lead to 6-1 on the power play. Saulnier scored her second of the game at 18:56.
Jenner completed her hat trick at 14:13 of the third and Cornell skated away with the 8-1 win.
Syracuse's 14 shots in the game is the lowest amount of shots it's taken in a game this season after having 24 against RIT (Nov. 10, 2012), RPI (Nov. 24, 2012) and Mercyhurst (Jan. 11, 2013). Also, the eight goals allowed were the most that SU has allowed all season. The previous was five goal which SU allowed against No. 2 Clarkson (Dec. 8, 2012) and No. 10 Northeastern (Oct. 6, 2012).
The Orange continue its five-game road swing this weekend when it travels to Lindenwood on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
