SU Sweeps PSU with 4-1 Win

SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse ice hockey team completed its sweep of Penn State, defeating the Nittany Lions, 4-1, at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange (14-11-1, 8-3-1 CHA) put together a three-goal first period and added an empty-net tally at the end of the game, to pick up its eighth conference win of the season.
Sophomore defenseman Kaillie Goodnough scored the game-winner while goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater tallied 14 saves. Brittney Krebs had two assists.
The Orange wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring 3:04 into the first period. Junior forward Margot Scharfe passed the puck in front of the net where senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe was positioned. Carrie-Mattimoe slid it over to sophomore forward Nicole Ferrara. Ferrara was waiting on the left post and knocked the puck past PSU goaltender Celine Whitlinger for her sixth goal of the season.
At 4:56, SU would score again. The Orange fired off multiple shots and Krebs was there to pick up a rebound off of Whitlinger's pads. Krebs tapped it to Goodnough, who buried the puck for her second goal of the season.
The Orange jumped to a 3-0 lead after senior forward Jacquie Greco tallied her eighth goal of the season on the power play. Freshman forward Nicole Renault pushed the puck up the ice to freshman forward Melissa Piacentini. Piacentini skated down the right side of the ice and found Greco in the middle. Greco shot the puck over Whitlinger's top left shoulder at 11:29 in the frame.
The Nittany Lions would strike in the second period, when Jill Holdcroft picked up her rebound on a PSU power play and beat Drinkwater. Shannon Yoxheimer and Jess Desorcie were credited with the helpers.
Julie Knerr would secure the Orange's victory with an empty-net goal at 19:36 in the third period. Krebs had the assist on her third goal of the season.
With her assist on Greco's goal, Piacentini has extended her point streak to six-straight games. She had an assist in last night's contest against the Nittany Lions and one today. In the six-game stretch, the rookie has scored three goals and four assists.
Scharfe also had a multi-point weekend, notching two assists. She had one against PSU this afternoon, and had the secondary assist on Nicole Renault's goal in last night's 1-0 win. Renault had the game-winning goal last night and an assist on Greco's goal today as well.
The Orange heads to the Robert Morris next weekend for a crucial CHA series with Robert Morris, on Friday, Feb. 1st, at 3 p.m. and Saturday Feb. 2nd at 3 p.m.
