MOON TOWNSHIP, PA - Behind two goals from sophomore forward Nicole Ferrara, the Syracuse ice hockey team edged Robert Morris, 3-2, on the road this afternoon. The Orange's (15-11-1, 9-3-1) win was its fifth in a row and ninth in the CHA, which is the most conference wins that SU has recorded in a single season in the history of the program. Prior to this season, SU had recorded eight conference wins in the 2009-10 season.
"It was a big two points for us today," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "Things got pretty hectic after they made it 3-2, but we did a good job of weathering the storm in the defensive end and came out with the win."
Ferrara scored her first of the game 8:33 into the first 20 minutes of play. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe dished the puck out to Julie Knerr at the bottom of the right circle who shot the puck, which was saved by Kristen DiCiocco. Carrie-Mattimoe was there to pick up the rebound and put it back on net. Her shot was blocked but Ferrara was this there time to pick up the rebound and put the Orange up, 1-0.
RMU's Thea Imbrogno answered SU's tally at 13:05 with a goal of her own after picking up a rebound of her own shot. Heading into the second period, the score was at a 1-1 dead lock.
Piacentini would give the Orange a 2-1 advantage only 49 seconds into the second period. Piacentini has scored at least one point in the past seven games, dating back to the game against No. 7 Mercyhurst on Jan. 12th. In that span, she has notched four goals and four assists.
At 2:56, Ferrara would strike again. The sophomore scored her eighth of the season, putting SU up two goals, 3-1, after streaking down the ice and shooting the puck from the bottom of the right circle. Sophomore Nicole Renault had the assist. Renault has registered a point in five straight games, with one goal and five assists.
Cobina Delaney would put the Colonials within a goal of SU at 14:44 in the second period. At 18:52, Robert Morris pulled its goaltender but the Orange defense fought off the extra attacker, securing its 3-2 win.
Ferrara also scored the game-winning goal in the last meeting between the two teams on Dec. 1st. She scored with 1:45 left in the game on the power play to give SU the 4-5 win against the Colonials.
Junior goaltender Kallie Billadeau recorded 31 saves against the Colonials. Both teams went 0-for-5 on the power play. The Colonials edged SU in shots, 33-32.
The two teams meet tomorrow again, Friday, Feb. 2nd, at 3 p.m.
