Scharfe Nets Two in Loss to #8/9 Lakers

SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team was edged by No. 8/9 Mercyhurst, 3-2, at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Margot Scharfe scored twice for the Orange (18-13-1, 12-5-1 CHA) in its fifth conference loss of the season, while junior goaltender Kallie Billadeau notched24 saves. SU responded to a three-goal first period by the Lakers with two goals of their own in the second frame, but eventually fell short on the scoreboard.
Vailia Higson scored Mercyhurst's first of the game 6:49 into the first period. Welch found Higson who shot from the top of the right circle, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
Kaleigh Chippy would add a Laker tally at 9:52. Lauren Jones extended Mercyhurst's lead to 3-0 at 14:22 after picking up her own rebound off of a previous shot.
After being outshot 17-10 in the first period, the Orange came out firing in in the second period, outshooting the Lakers, 10-5.
The Orange scored its first power play goal since Jan.25th against Penn State at 13:04 in the second frame. Brittney Krebs passed the puck to Kaillie Goodnough, who found Scharfe on the left side of the net. Scharfe scored her first of the night and the Orange was down, 3-1.
Roughly four minutes later, Piacentini dug it from the corner to Cara Johnson who slid it across the crease to Scharfe. Scharfe scored again from almost the same spot as her first goal at 17:24 and the Orange were within one of Mercyhurst, 3-2.
Neither teams would score in the third period, while the Lakers held a 5-3 shot advantaged in the last 20 minutes of play. For the Lakers, goaltender Stephanie Ciampa tallied 21 saves. The Orange was 1-for-4 on the power play while holding Mercyhurst to 0-for-4.
This was Scharfe's fourth multipoint game and the third time she's scored twice in one game this season.
Syracuse wraps up its regular season next weekend when it hosts Lindenwood on Feb. 22nd and Feb. 23rd.
