Pollitt Wins BIG EAST 60m Hurdles Title

GENEVA, OHIO – The Syracuse track and field team had six student-athletes medal at the 2013 Indoor BIG EAST Championships. Sophomore Donald Pollitt was the Orange's BIG EAST Champion in the 60m hurdles, while senior Amadou Gueye won silver in the same race. Junior Jaquan Holland won a silver medal in the 60m dash and sophomore Martin Hehir won silver in the 3000m race. Freshman Shania Harrison claimed silver in the 60m dash while senior Lauren Penney won bronze in the 3000m race.
The men's team placed sixth as a team with 60 points and the women finished in ninth with 30 points.
Pollit ran a PR of 7.79 to win first in the 60m while Gueye grabbed silver with a time of 7.81. Both of their times broke the SPIRE facility record of 7.82 that was set in 2012 and were individual PR's. Rounding out the 60m hurdles was sophomore Darren McCluskey, who placed eighth with a time of 8.35.
Holland picked up a silver medal in the 60m dash, setting a new PR of 6.80 in the race. Sophomore Jihaad Howard placed fourth in the dash, tying his PR of 6.83. Holland raced in the 200m dash as well, coming in fifth with a time of 21.49.
Hehir grabbed second in the 3000m, recording a PR of 8:04.33 while senior Robert Molke placed 11th (8:13.91). Joseph Whelan came in 15th with a time of 8:22.16 while sophomore Ryan Urie finished in 20th (8:31.10).
Senior Andrew Nelson finished in fifth place in the 1000m run with a time of2:30.79. During the mile, sophomore Forrest Misenti came in seventh with a PR of 4:11.27.
Harrison recorded a time of 7.51 in the 60m dash, giving her a silver medal in her first ever BIG EAST Championships. Penny's time of 9:24.46 helped her to win a bronze in the 3000m race. Pagano finished in 10th (9:42.16) while Shaylyn Tuite came in 14th (9:58.82) and Brenna Symoniak was in 16th (10:02.33).
In the indoor pentathlon, senior Erica Belanger recorded 3056 points which placed her in 11th place. During the 1000m run, Brianna Nerud's time of 2:50.28 was good for sixth place. Sophomore Maura Linde ran to a 12th place finish in the mile run, notching a time of 5:06.76.
