SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 8/8 Syracuse (22-5, 10-4) had its 38-game Carrier Dome winning streak snapped in a 57-46 setback to No. 11/11 Georgetown (21-4, 11-3) on Saturday, Feb. 23. The game was played in front of an on-campus single-game record crowd of 35,012.
Junior C.J. Fair reached double figures in scoring for the 17th consecutive game with 13 points. Senior James Southerland also had 13 points, while senior Brandon Triche added 10 points.
Fair and Triche combined for Syracuse's first nine points as the Orange jumped out to a five-point lead. Southerland hit a deep three to give SU its largest lead of the game, 12-4, at the 12:07 mark before Otto Porter sparked a Hoyas comeback. He accounted for 14 of the Hoyas next 17 points as Georgetown took a 21-15 lead with 3:18 on the clock.
Sophomore Michael Carter-Williams hit a layup for Syracuse's first points in more than four minutes of play. His free throw completed a three-point play to bring the Orange with three. Fair followed with a basket and Southerland's three-pointer with 27 seconds remaining gave the Orange a 23-21 halftime lead.
The first five minutes of the second half featured back-and-forth action as it included one tie and two lead changes. With the score tied, 29-29, Porter hit a three-pointer to start Georgetown on a 10-2 scoring run, which gave the Hoyas an eight-point advantage with 11:26 remaining. Southerland halted the run with a three-pointer and a steal and slam dunk by Carter-Williams cut the deficit to 41-37 with 6:49 to play.
Porter converted a four-point play on his way to a career-high 33 points to put the Hoyas back up by eight. Georgetown increased its lead to 10, but the Orange wouldn't go away. A basket by Fair and a free throw by freshman Jerami Grant cut the lead to seven, but that was as close as Syracuse could get.
Syracuse shot 34.0 percent (17-for-50) from the field and struggled from three-point range, hitting just 4-of-20 behind the arc.
The Orange has a quick turnaround as it hits the road to play at No. 17/20 Marquette on Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
