SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 12/12 Syracuse will face its third straight ranked opponent when it hosts No. 10/9 Louisville on Saturday, March 2 in the Carrier Dome. Tipoff is set for noon. The Orange (22-6) is tied for fourth place in the BIG EAST with a 10-5 conference record, while the Cardinals (23-5) are a game ahead of SU with an 11-4 mark in league play.
The game will be broadcast on CBS. Fans not in attendance can listen to the action on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network and its flagship TK99 (99.5 FM). A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse lost its second straight game in a 74-71 setback to No. 22/22 Marquette on Monday, Feb. 25 in Milwaukee.
The Orange jumped out to an early lead and held a 29-19 advantage before Marquette recorded eight consecutive points to cut the lead to two with 1:04 to play in the opening half. Junior Baye Moussa Keita halted the Golden Eagles' run with a three-point play with 50 seconds on the clock, helping Syracuse to a 32-28 halftime lead.
The second half featured scoring runs by both teams. With Syracuse up 53-47, Marquette recorded five straight points to cut the lead to one. After a Brandon Triche jumper, the Golden Eagles scored the next nine points to take a 61-55 lead with 3:37 remaining. Marquette hit 10 of its next 12 attempts from the free throw line and led 73-68 with seven seconds on the clock.
Back-to-back three pointers by C.J. Fair and Michael Carter-Williams cut the lead to 73-71. Marquette's Vander Blue was fouled on the inbounds pass after Carter Williams' basket, sending him to the line. He missed the first but hit the second to extend the lead to three and give SU the ball with .2 seconds remaining. Syracuse's long inbounds pass was intercepted giving the Golden Eagles the victory.
Fair led the Orange with 20 points, and James Southerland added 15 points off the bench. Carter-Williams finished with 14 points, while Moussa Keita led SU on the boards with eight.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Louisville has won seven out of its last eight games. The Cardinals are coming off of a 79-58 victory against DePaul on Wednesday, Feb. 27.
Junior guard Russ Smith leads the offense. He ranks second in the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per game. Smith is also ranked second in the BIG EAST in steals, averaging 2.2 per contest. Chane Behanan (11.0 ppg.) and Peyton Siva (10.1 ppg.) are the Cardinals' other double-digit scorers. Gorgui Dieng is the team's leading rebounder and ranks second in the BIG EAST with 9.9 per contest. Dieng is also ranked second in the BIG EAST in blocked shots, averaging 2.6 per game.
The Cardinals are led by Rick Pitino, who is in his 12th year at the helm of the program. Pitino is the only coach in NCAA history to take three different teams to the NCAA Final Four. In 27 seasons as a collegiate head coach at five different schools, Pitino has compiled a 629-234 record.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville leads the all-time series with Syracuse, 13-7. After a seven-game losing streak, the Orange has won the last three matches, including a 70-68 win this season on Jan. 19 in Louisville.
