SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse men's rowing begins its 2013 campaign on Saturday at Princeton against the host Tigers and Georgetown in the crews' annual scrimmage. Racing on Lake Carnegie begins at 8 p.m.
Head coach Dave Reischman's Orange crew is coming off a successful Spring Break training trip to Clemson, S.C. two weeks ago, followed by its first week on the waters of Onondaga Lake and the surrounding Oswego and Seneca Rivers.
This is the fifth-straight year the Orange, Tigers and Hoyas have met to start the season.
Scrimmage Format
The day will begin at 8 a.m. with a 2,000-meter race between the three schools. The crews will then turn around and race a 1,000-meter race, followed by a break. The crews will then go back on the water for shorter piece races.

2012 Success
Like Reischman crews usually do, the 2012 Orange peaked late in the season, when it matters most. Syracuse, after a cup season that saw a win in the Conlan Cup and a third-place finish in the Goes Trophy races, placed sixth in the Grand Final at Eastern Sprints before becoming the surprise crew of the IRA National Championship, finishing fifth in the Grand Final.
Syracuse out-sprinted this weekend's host, Princeton, for the third and final grand final spot in their semifinal race on June 1, edging the Tigers by just over half a second.
New Look in 2013
The Orange V8 will be comprised of a young crew in 2013, but Reischman does return three members of that fifth-place IRA boat: senior Mason Leasure and juniors Jake Martens and Mac Zink.
Taking over coxswain duties from graduated senior Isaac Budmen is junior Liz Abraham. Leasure moves from the four-seat to take over stroke duties from graduated Aidan Barrett, while the rest of this week's V8 is comprised of Martens (7), freshman Ryan McCarry (6), Zink (5), freshman Kamin Vassilos (4), sophomore Douglas Wetzel (3), senior Kyle Rogers (2) and senior Tyler Toporowski (bow).
A new rule for 2013 allows freshmen to race in varsity boats.
Last Time vs. Princeton/Georgetown
In last season's scrimmage at Princeton on March 31, 2012, the Orange finished second in the V8 2K in a time 6:18.5, behind Princeton (6:11.8) and ahead of Georgetown (6:25.4).
The closest race of the day was the 2V8, with the Tigers just edging the Orange, 6:19.6 to 6:20.9, with the Hoyas finishing third in 7:00.3.
The freshman eight crews finished in the same order with Princeton first, SU second and Georgetown third.
Up Next
The Orange heads to Annapolis Maryland on April 20 to face Cornell and Navy in the annual Goes Trophy race.
