PRINCETON, N.J. -Â Syracuse men's rowing kicked off its spring racing season with second-place finishes across the board in its annual scrimmage at Princeton vs. Georgetown and the host Tigers on Lake Carnegie on Saturday.
Â
Princeton rowed to victory in all four races, while the Orange finished second in all four and Georgetown was third in all three of the races it had entries.
Â
Head coach Dave Reischman's varsity eight, coxed by junior Liz Abraham, covered the 2K course in a time of 5:56.4, 9.2 seconds behind Princeton and 2.7 ticks ahead of Georgetown. SU's V8 oarsmen consisted of Mason Leasure (stroke), Jake Martens (7), Ryan McCarry (6), Mac Zink (5), Kamin Vassilos (4), Douglas Wetzel (3), Kyle Rogers (2) and Tyler Toporowski (bow).
Â
We weren't very happy with the racing," Reischman said. "We have a young crew and we have been having trouble at racing cadence in practice and it carried over to the race, but we are optimistic because it is March. We will go back to the boathouse for the next couple weeks, try to sort it out and be ready for the Goes Trophy."
Â
SU's second varsity eight, coxed by Kevin Tompkins, rowed to a second-place finish in 5:58.1, 6.4 seconds behind the Tigers and 28 seconds ahead of the Hoyas' third-place crew.
Â
The Orange third varsity eight covered the 2,000 meters in 6:16.9, behind first-place Princeton (6:04.6) and with open water over the third-place Georgetown freshman crew (6:28.6).
Â
In the 4V/5V, SU's eight gave the Tigers their closest challenge of the day, finishing in 6:32.8, 6.2 seconds behind the host 4V8 (6:26.6) and 24.9 seconds ahead of Princeton's 5V8 (6:57.7).
Â
The three schools have met in this early-season scrimmage for five straight years. The day started with the 2K races, followed by shorter pieces between all the crews in the morning and again in the afternoon.
Â
The crews rowed in flat conditions on Carnegie Lake into a very light headwind.
Â
Syracuse heads to Annapolis, Md. on April 20 to face Cornell and Navy in the annual Goes Trophy race.
