BOSTON -Â Syracuse women's rowing turned in a dominant performance on the Charles River on Saturday, winning the Kittell Cup while sweeping all races vs. Boston University.
Â
In its second week of racing of the spring season and its first with its complete varsity eight lineup, head coach Justin Moore's Orange made a strong statement, ending a two-year Kittell Cup drought with an 11.5-second victory. It was Syracuse's fifth overall victory in the 11-year history of the Kittell Cup, awarded annually to the winner of the SU-BU V8 race.
Â
"I was so proud for our seniors on this day because the racing the team did today was a statement about what has been happening in this program over the last three years," Moore said. "It was really the middle 1,000 meters in each race that carried us through and the work that is put in in the off-season and at practice comes through in the middle of the race course."
Â
After a close start to the race, SU settled into a strong cadence take a two-seat lead by the 500-meter mark. By the 1,000-meter mark, the Orange had a four to five-seat open-water lead. At 1,500 meters, SU maintained a one and a half boat length lead used its final sprint to cross the line in 6:52.1, over two lengths ahead of the Terriers (7:03.6).
The Orange V8 was comprised of Kristina Herb (cox), Holly Johnston (stroke), Natalie Mastracci (7), Carmen Failla (6), Emma Basher (5), Georgia Hamilton (4), Amy Ludovici (3), Maggie McCrudden (2) and Anna Kaszycki (bow).
Â
In the second varsity eight race, the Syracuse crew took control early, building a four-seat lead by the 500-meter mark and taking it to a two open boat-length lead by the halfway mark. The Orange crossed the line in 7:05.9, 19 seconds ahead of BU (7:24.9).
Â
In the varsity four race, SU continued to display its dominance with the "A" crew, coxed by Gillian Carlucci, and "B" crew, coxed by Marta Ulbricht, finished one-two in times of 7:56.3 and 8:01.8, respectively, well ahead of the BU V4 (8:24.4).
Â
The Orange completed the sweep on the Charles River with a victory in the third varsity eight. The SU
women, coxed by freshman Amanda Baizan, cruised to an open-water victory in 7:26.3 over second-place Northeastern (7:36.3) and BU finished third (7:45.7).
