BIG EAST Release | Orange Challenge Cup Recap
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -Â Syracuse's women's varsity eight crew was named the BIG EAST Boat of the Week on Wednesday by the conference office. The Orange V8 won the Orange Challenge Cup vs. Penn and Northeastern on Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
Â
In the V8 race between crews all receiving votes in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, the Orange proved too strong down the stretch, winning in a time of 6:27.8, 4.6 seconds ahead of second-place Penn (6:32.4) and 8.1 ticks ahead of third-place Northeastern (6:35.9).
Â
The Orange claimed the Orange Challenge Cup for the first time since 2009 and its seventh time overall in the race between SU, the Quakers and Huskies that has been contested annually since 1979.
Â
Head coach Justin Moore's V8 consisted of the same lineup that recorded an open water victory the previous weekend at Boston University: Kristina Herb (cox), Holly Johnston (stroke), Natalie Mastracci (7), Carmen Failla (6), Emma Basher (5), Georgia Hamilton (4), Amy Ludovici (3), Maggie McCrudden (2) and Anna Kaszycki (bow).
Â
"I am unbelievably proud of the team for going down to the Philly race course and handle the turn in the course and fast tailwind conditions against good competition," Moore said after the race. "We caught a crab about 15 strokes into the race and fell behind about six to seven seats. The rhythm they responded with was an angry and very powerful rhythm. From the 200-meter to the 700-meter mark through the turn, I have not seen the crew row that powerfully and that composed."
Â
After no racing this weekend, the Orange returns to action on Saturday, April 20 when it hosts its lone home regatta of the season at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse, the O'Leary Cup vs. Radcliffe-Harvard and Dartmouth.
