PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Following a 7-1 performance in conference play, the Syracuse tennis team (12-7), has been selected as the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship. The Orange will face off against No. 13 Connecticut at noon in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday, April 18.
SU finished the regular season with a 12-7 overall record, picking up wins in six of its last seven matches. Five of those victories came against BIG EAST conference opponents. Â
This year, all 15 women's tennis teams in the league will compete for the conference title, which will begin with seven matches on Thursday. Top-seeded Notre Dame received this year's only first round bye, and will square off against the winner of the event's opening match between No. 8 Marquette and No. 9 Cincinnati.
Syracuse will compete in the second match of the tournament, Thursday afternoon against the Huskies. Earlier this season, SU shutout UConn 7-0 sweeping both doubles and singles competition. Should the Orange advance, another match is scheduled for noon on Friday against the winner of No. 5 DePaul and No. 12 Providence. Syracuse has also defeated both the Blue Demons and the Friars in the regular season.
USF is hosting the four-day event, which will begin Thursday, April 18Â and end on Sunday, April 21. There is also a consolation bracket in this year's tournament, which guarantees each team at least two matches.
