SU Hosts O'Leary Cup Regatta Sunday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Syracuse women's rowing hosts its lone home regatta of the spring season on Sunday when it races Dartmouth and Harvard-Radcliffe for the O'Leary Cup at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse on the Onondaga Lake Outlet. Racing begins at 11 a.m. and the varsity eights are scheduled to race at noon.

The regatta was originally scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m., but was moved to Sunday due to the forecast of very high winds in Syracuse on Saturday.

With a 2-0 record in cup races this season, winning the Kittell Cup vs. Boston University and the Orange Challenge Cup vs. Northeastern and Penn, the Orange varsity eight will be looking to win the O'Leary Cup against the Big Green and Black and White for the first time since 2001.

Syracuse has received votes every week in the CRCA/USRowing Collegiate Poll this season. This week, the Orange is second among "others receiving votes" with 35. Radcliffe is ranked No. 8 in the country, while Dartmouth garnered seven votes.

O'Leary Cup History
The O'Leary Cup, named for Radcliffe coach Liz O'Leary, has been awarded to the winner of the V8 race between Syracuse, Dartmouth and Radcliffe since 2000. The Orange has won the cup just once, in 2001, while Radcliffe has won eight, including last season, and Dartmouth has won four.

SU assistant coach Alicea Kochis rowed in the six-seat for the Orange V8 that won the O'Leary Cup in 2001 on its way to the grand final at the NCAA Championship.

Last season, the Black and White won in a time 6:56.8, while the Big Green was second in 6:58.2 and the Orange third in 7:01.1 on April 14, 2012 into moderate headwinds on the Charles River.

Syracuse women's rowing won four out of five races, including the varsity eight to win the Orange Challenge Cup vs. Pennsylvania and Northeastern on the Schuylkill River on April 6 in Philadelphia. The Orange claimed to the Orange Challenge Cup for the first time since 2009 and its seventh time overall in the race between SU, the Quakers and Huskies that has been contested annually since 1979.

In the V8 race, the Orange proved too strong down the stretch, winning in a time of 6:27.8, 4.6 seconds ahead of second-place Penn (6:32.4) and 8.1 ticks ahead of third-place Northeastern (6:35.9), earning SU's V8 BIG EAST Boat of the Week honors.

SU also won the 2V8, V4A and V4B races, while finishing second to Penn in the 3V8.

The Orange heads west next week to race Oregon State, Stanford and Washington State in Beaver Lake, Ore. on Saturday, April 27. SU returns to Central New York the following weekend, facing Cornell and Louisville in Ithaca on Saturday, May 4 in the regular season finale.
