Orange Downs Pitt in Consolation Round

TAMPA, Fla. – The Syracuse tennis team competed in the first round of the consolation bracket at the 2013 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship this afternoon, claiming a 4-0 victory against No. 10-seed Pittsburgh at the USF Varsity Courts. With the victory, the Orange moves to 14-8 overall in 2013 and 9-2 in the league.
SU recorded its third consecutive doubles point in the tournament as sophomores Komal Safdar and Amanda Rodgers got things going with an 8-5 win on court two. Junior Maddie Kobelt and freshman Brittany Lashway paired up for an 8-5 win on court one to clinch the point.
The tandem of Rodgers and Safdar have now combined for a a team-high 14-1 record, while Lashway and Kobelt are just below them with an 11-2 mark.
Heading into singles play, sophomore Jimena Wu and Kobelt registered quick wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in straight sets. Wu defeated Kimmy Borza by a score of 6-1, 6-1, while Kobelt beat Jocelyn Lu 6-3, 6-3. Rodgers sealed the match for the Orange with a 7-6, 6-1 triumph against Tayor Washington.
After claiming the final two matches, Rodgers improves to 11-3 from the No. 1 position, for a team-best mark of 15-5 overall. Kobelt is just behind her with a 13-3 record on court two, while moving to 15-7 overall this year.
