SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse women's rowing put in a strong showing in its only home regatta of the season, finishing second in all five races, including the varsity eight race for the O'Leary Cup, which was won by No. 8 Harvard-Radcliffe on Sunday at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse.
Syracuse swept a strong Dartmouth squad, which finished third in all five races of the regatta that was moved to Sunday from due to high winds on Saturday.
After the Orange and Radcliffe jumped out to an early lead on Dartmouth in the varsity eight race, the Black and White took control of the race through the second 500 meters. SU settled into second position and responded well to a late charge by the Big Green to take second place in a time of 6:55.3. Radcliffe's O'Leary Cup-winning time was 6:47.9, while Dartmouth finished in 6:57.7.
"You always want to win your races and come away disappointed when you don't," head coach Justin Moore said. "But we hadn't swept Dartmouth in ages and they are a high quality crew. As for that seven-second margin in the 1V (behind Radcliffe), I wish it were a little bit closer but I know we haven't hit our peak speed yet and there is more speed to be had with this group of women."
The Black and White posted a 9.8-second victory in the 2V8 race in a time of 6:51.6 with SU second in 7:01.4 and Dartmouth in third in 7:04.1.
In the varsity four "A" race, Radcliffe crossed in a time of 7:45.0, while the Orange finished in 7:53.0 and the Big Green in 8:08.1. The V4 "B" race was Radcliffe's largest margin of victory of the day, coming in in a time of 7:42.8, while SU crossed in 8:01.3 and Dartmouth finished in 8:08.1.
The morning began with the 3V8/4V8 race, won by Radcliffe's 3V8 in 7:11.7 with SU's 3V8 second in 7:25.1 and Radcliffe's 4V8 third in 7:29.1.
The teams rowed in sunny conditions with temperatures in the low 40s and winds out of the North at 10-12 mph.
The O'Leary Cup, named for Radcliffe coach Liz O'Leary, has been awarded to the winner of the V8 race between Syracuse, Dartmouth and Radcliffe since 2000.
The Orange heads west this week to Oregon State to race the host Beavers, San Diego, Stanford and Washington State in Beaver Lake, Ore. on Saturday.
