Men’s Varsity 8 Crew Third at Columbia

OVERPECK CREEK, N.J. - No. 14 Syracuse men's rowing recorded two second-place finishes and two third-place finishes vs. No. 10 Columbia and No. 13 Boston University on Saturday at Overpeck Creek. The Orange finished third to the Terriers and Lions in the varsity eight race.
In the V8 race, the Terrier's won in a time of 6:00.9 to capture the Conlan Cup from Syracuse and retain the Doc Lusins Trophy from Columbia. The Lions finished second in 6:05.0, while the Orange was third in 6:09.5.
Syracuse's second varsity eight posted a second-place showing in a time of 6:17.7, 5.4 seconds behind Boston University's winning time and 6.7 ticks ahead of Columbia's crew.
The Orange also placed second in the varsity four, crossing in 7:20.6, five seconds behind BU (7:15.6) and 26.2 seconds ahead of Columbia (7:56.8).
BU completed its sweep with a victory in the third varsity eight in a time 6:11.1, ahead of second-place Columbia (6:21.9) and third-place Syracuse (6:25.1).
The Terriers took back the Conlan Cup after the Orange's victory in last season's race on the Charles River. The win was BU's second in the last three years after not winning it the previous five years.
Syracuse and Boston University have been racing for the Conlan Cup every year since 1987 when the trophy was created. The race is named after Bill Conlan who was the founder of the Boston University rowing program. The Orange has won the cup 15 times in 27 years.
The Doc Lusins Trophy goes to the winner of the annual race between the Lions and Terriers.
The crews rowed in 7-8 mph headwinds and good water on the Overpeck Creek 2,000-meter race course.
After a weekend off, the Orange will host its lone home regatta of the spring season, the Packard Cup, vs. Dartmouth on Saturday, May 11 at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse on the Onondaga Lake Outlet.
