LOWELL, ORE. - Syracuse women's rowing competed in two sessions of racing at the Oregon State Classic on Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore. on Saturday. The Orange varsity eight and varsity four each finished fifth, while the second varsity eight placed second.
The five-way regatta featured crews from the host Beavers, San Diego, No. 11 Stanford and No. 18 Washington State. It was the Orange's first races on the West Coast since 2010.
After finishing second to Stanford (7:18.9) in its morning heat in a time of 7:43.25, SU's V8, coxed by Kristina Herb, finished fifth in the afternoon final in a time of 7:32.5. The Cardinal won in a time 7:15.0, while Washington State (7:20.1) was second, Oregon State (7:23.6) third and San Diego (7:28.7) fourth.
"We are a better crew than what we showed today," head coach Justin Moore said. "It is part of the growth process."
The Orange second varsity eight also finished second to Stanford in its morning heat in times of 6:46.6 and 6:34.8. Coxswain Katherine Isaza's crew then placed third in the afternoon final in a time of 7:38.4, behind Stanford (7:22.2) and Washington State (7:28.9) and ahead of Oregon State (7:40.2) and San Diego (7:51.3).
"The 2V8 had a solid row," head coach Justin Moore said. "It was the most solid race they have had this season. They were really good in the middle of the race course and responded when Oregon State challenged them."
In the V4, SU (7:43.25) was second to Stanford (7:18.9) in its morning heat, and went on to finish fifth in the afternoon final in 8:40.6. Stanford won in a time of 8:18.9 with Oregon State (8:19.3) second, Washington State (8:23.3) third and San Diego (8:38.4) fourth.
